Man shot while feeding homeless

An Oakland, Calif., man was on life support after being shot in the head while people from his family's van, police say.

The man, identified only as "Brother John," 29; his wife, 35; and two stepdaughters were following their usual route to hand out home-cooked meals Wednesday morning when a car pulled up next to their van and opened fire, the Oakland Tribune reported.

Brother John was shot in the head. His wife was grazed by a bullet on the shoulder and one of the children, a 3-year-old, was hit in the arm. Their names have not been released.

"There was not one word," said William, a man who was receiving a meal from the family at the time of the shooting. "All those shots, I had to duck. (The victim) didn't have time to duck. The kids and the wife were screaming and hollering."

William, whose last name was being withheld due to concern for his safety, said the other vehicle stopped and backed up before someone inside opened fire then sped off.

Police say there were no known motives for the attack. A reward of as much as $25,000 was being offered for information leading to the arrest of the shooter

Man who posed as teen pleads guilty

A man who posed as a teen basketball player pleaded guilty in a Texas court to sexual assault and tampering charges, officials say.

Guerdwich Montimer, 23, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two counts of sexual assault of a child and three counts of tampering with government records in Ector County court, the Odessa (Texas) American reported.

Montimer admitted lying about his name and age, posing as Jerry Joseph, a 16-year-old Haitian orphan, to have a high school "do over." In addition, he admitted having a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl.

"Today, he had to go into court and acknowledge who he was," District Attorney Bobby Bland said. "And to me, that was very satisfactory. I enjoyed watching him have to acknowledge in a court of law that he was Guerdwich Montimer."

Montimer was sentenced to three years in prison for each charge.

'Universal' flu shot just five years away?

A universal flu vaccine against all strains may come in the next five years, replacing annual shots, the chief of the National Institutes of Health said.

Dr. Francis Collins said Tuesday he is "guardedly optimistic" about the possibility of a long-term inoculation to replace the one "you'd have to renew every year," USA Today reported.

A universal vaccine "seemed completely out of reach only a few years ago," Collins said, because flu viruses mutate yearly, quickly rendering each year's vaccines developed for specific flu viruses obsolete.

However, researchers have discovered "there are parts [of the virus] that don't change …. If you designed a vaccine to go after the constant part of the virus, you'd be protected against all strains," Collins said.

Such a vaccine is "not a question of whether, but when," Arnold Monto of the University of Michigan said. "I think five years is a bit ambitious, given where we are now."

In February, researchers in the United Kingdom announced some preliminary success in creating a universal flu vaccine for humans, USA Today reported.

Crocodile caught in Siberian lake

A rescue team in the Russian republic of Khakassia said they caught a 6 1/2-foot crocodile spotted floating in a lake.

Yury Stolbun, head of the rescue group, said Wednesday a tour group in a catamaran spotted the crocodile floating in the water and initially thought it was a log, RIA Novosti reported Wednesday.

"Suddenly the log started blinking and paddling with its legs," Stolbun said.

Stolbun said the croc belongs to a man who offers tourists the chance to be photographed with the reptile.

"Something distracted the owner and the crocodile escaped into the lake," Stolbun said.

The rescuer said the crocodile was captured uninjured.

Kate spotted wearing Lady Di's earrings

Britain's Prince William has given his new bride Kate a pair of diamond and sapphire earrings that once belonged to his late mother Diana.

The Sunday Mirror said the Duchess of Cambridge had them changed from studs to drop baubles.

Kate wore the earrings, which match her engagement ring, on her first official visit with William to Canada and the United States this month. The ring had been presented to Diana by William's father, Prince Charles, more than three decades ago.

Kate wore the earrings for the first time when she and her husband attended Wimbledon in June.

"Now they're married, William wanted her to have some of his mother's favorite pieces," a courtier told the Mirror.

Prince William and Kate married in April.

Grandma Superhero Adventures

Today I am going to share with you an amazing women power in 91 age. A few years ago, French photographer Sacha Goldberger found his 91-year-old Hungarian grandmother Frederika feeling lonely and depressed. To cheer her up, he suggested that they shoot a series of outrageous photographs in unusual costumes, poses, and locations. Grandma reluctantly agreed, but once they got rolling, she couldn’t stop smiling. Frederika was born in Budapest 20 years before World War II. During the war, at the peril of her own life, she courageously saved the lives of ten people. When asked how, Goldberger told us “she hid the Jewish people she knew, moving them around to different places every day.” As a survivor of Nazism and Communism, she then immigrated away from Hungary to France, forced by the Communist regime to leave her homeland illegally or face death.
