Sweden arrests 4 on terror allegations

Swedish police said they arrested four terror suspects in the western city of Gothenburg early Sunday.

The TT news agency said the country's National Task Force, a specialized police unit, swept into a part of the city and cordoned it off around midnight.

An art gallery hosting an opening party was ordered evacuated as barriers were erected in the vicinity, the report said.

Police released no details of the arrests.

Sara Kvarnstrom, a spokLinkeswoman for the Swedish Security Services, was also tight-lipped about the operation.

"There's no cause for the general public to be concerned," she said.

In October, after two people were arrested on charges of plotting a bombing in Gothenburg, federal security officials said some 200 Islamic militants were known to be in the country, CNN said.

The arrests came on the 10th anniversary of four al-Qaida suicide aircraft attacks on the United States.

Woman ordered to stay away from Cotillard

The FBI has arrested and charged a New York City woman with stalking French movie star Marion Cotillard, officials said.

The FBI charged Teresa Yuan, of Queens, with interstate stalking, NBC New York reported.

In its criminal case, the FBI said Yuan, believed to be in her 30s, started sending Cotillard's Web site a series of increasingly threatening messages and e-mails in April.

Yuan was arrested Thursday and released on a $50,000 bond Friday.

Cotillard, 35, and her family had "become concerned for their physical safety," the FBI said in its complaint, filed in a Brooklyn federal court.

"The guilt and sorrow I feel now, I won't feel after it happens," Yuan said in a threatening video sent to a Cotillard fan site July 23. "After it happens I'll feel no regrets whatsoever … that's apparently how it feels to be a killer, to be a murderer."

Yuan's attorney, Michael Schneider, declined to comment on the case, the New York Daily News reported.

Yuan reportedly hissed and growled in one of the videos sent to Cotillard's Web site.

As a condition of her release, Yuan was ordered not to contact Cotillard.

Cotillard won an Oscar for playing singer Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose," and she appears in the new Woody Allen movie "Midnight in Paris."

Arrest made in Detroit girl's death

Detroit police say they have a man into custody in the slaying of a 5-year-old girl.

The Detroit News reported Saturday a source said the unidentified man arrested Friday afternoon is believed to be the boyfriend of an aunt of the victim, Mariha Smith, 5.

"We have a person of interest that has been arrested based on preliminary findings by the homicide unit," Detroit police Sgt. Eren Stephens said.

Police said one of Mariha's aunts, Quanita Smith, who lived in the same house as the girl, and her boyfriend both failed a lie detector test in the days after Mariha disappeared.

The girl's body was found burned in an abandoned Detroit home July 24. An autopsy revealed she died of asphyxiation before her body was set on fire.

Speaking at her funeral Friday, police Chief Ralph Godbee Jr. lamented the premature death of a young child and bemoaned the state of society, the Detroit Press reported.

"What the hell is wrong with us?" Godbee asked. "When did we become pimps? When did we become gangsters? When did we stop loving our children?"

Detroit Councilwoman LinkBrenda Jones told those gathered for the service the violence must end.

"This has got to stop. We have to take care of each other," she said.

Mariha's death was the 206th homicide in Detroit as of Aug. 1, compared with 179 through the same period a year ago.

Man bought puffer fish poison to kill wife

A Chicago-area man pleaded guilty to attempting to kill his wife with poison from a puffer fish, court records show.

Edward F. Bachner IV, of Lake in the Hills, was trying to cash in on his wife's $20 million life insurance policy, WBBM, Chicago, reported.

Bachner was arrested in July 2008 after the FBI found he had been buying the puffer fish poison, tetrodotoxin, from the biochemical manufacturing firm Biotium under the name Dr. Edmund Backer of EB Strategic Research.

Biotium sent Bachner 64 milligrams of tetrodotoxin in four separate shipments to a post office. Bachner ordered a fifth shipment from another biotech firm, Ascent Scientific, for 98 mg.

The fatality rate of ingesting tetrodotoxin is 50 to 60 percent; 1 to 2 mg can be lethal.

It took FBI agents and hazardous materials teams two days to search Bachner's house for the poison when the man was arrested.

Bachner had previously been investigated in an alleged murder for hire plot but there was not enough evidence to charge him in that case.

No sentencing date for Bachner was reported.

DJ Sam Ronson arrested for alleged DUI

Celebrity disc jockey Sam Ronson, best known as Lindsay Lohan's ex-girlfriend, has been arrested for alleged driving under the influence outside Baker, Calif.

TMZ cited law enforcement sources it did not name as saying Ronson, 33, was pulled over by police for speeding as she drove home from Las Vegas Monday morning after working at the Lavo nightclub in the Palazzo hotel.

She failed a field sobriety test, refused to submit to a breathalyzer and was arrested, TMZ said.

The musician blew over the legal blood-alcohol limit when she finally took the breathalyzer test at the police station where she was booked, the report said.
