Judge tells Dougherty gang more charges could be coming

A judge on Friday advised three Florida siblings accused in a sensational multi-state crime spree that they could face attempted murder charges in a second Colorado county for firing on police during a high-speed chase, court documents show.

Huerfano District Court Judge Claude Appel ruled that there was enough evidence to hold Ryan and Lee Grace Dougherty and Dylan Dougherty Stanley on suspicion of attempted murder and first-degree assault "pending the filing of criminal charges."

The two brothers and their sister were advised of the possible charges Friday via a video hook-up from the jail in neighboring Pueblo County where they are being held on $1.25 million bond each.

Friday's action mirrors the attempted murder and first-degree assault on a peace officer charges prosecutors in Pueblo, Colorado, said on Thursday they are contemplating against the Doughertys there.

The siblings were wanted for allegedly shooting at a Florida police officer and robbing a Georgia bank when they fled the Southeast, and became the target of a nationwide manhunt that captured the attention of much of the country.

The trio was arrested on Wednesday in southern Colorado after a high-speed chase and shootout with police from multiple law enforcement agencies.

An arrest warrant affidavit filed in the latest case said a pursuing police officer heard "the distinct sound of gun fire" and saw one of the suspects firing out the right side of a speeding Subaru Impreza.

Investigators said they believe Ryan Dougherty was driving the car while Dylan Dougherty Stanley fired at pursuing officers with an AK-47.

The three fugitives were captured when their vehicle crashed while trying to avoid stop strips deployed on the highway, police said.

Dylan Dougherty Stanley was arrested inside the wrecked car and Lee Grace and Ryan Dougherty were apprehended following a foot chase, police said.

Lee Grace Dougherty was shot and wounded by a police officer after she leveled a weapon at him. The former topless dancer admitted that she "pointed a gun at the cop," according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Appel also issued a gag order prohibiting any attorneys, police or others involved in the investigation from making "extrajudicial" statements about the case.

Woman accused of having child videotape sex

A Dallas woman was arrested for allegedly having her 6-year-old daughter repeatedly make video recordings of her having group sex, police say.

The 24-year-old woman was jailed Monday on charges of indecency with a child, which is punishable by as much as 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine, The Dallas Morning News reported.

The identities of the mother and child have not been released.

A tip led Dallas police to the woman's apartment complex Saturday, where officers were told the woman forced her daughter to record her having sex with multiple men at the same time.

In an interview at the Dallas Children's Advocacy Center, the child "detailed filming and taking photographs" of her mother engaging in the sexual acts, police documents say.

The mother admitted having her daughter record her and "explained that there were three separate incidents involving six men" that her daughter recorded, beginning in March -- adding that "it was her idea to have [her daughter] make the recordings with a cellphone video recorder," the documents said.

Child Protective Services has placed the daughter in foster care and is investigating the matter. This is the second time CPS has been contacted about the mother, the newspaper said.

There had been concerns when the child was born that the woman was using drugs but neither she nor the child tested positive for drugs and the investigation was dropped in 2004.

Bail granted to suspected document thief

A federal judge in Baltimore ruled Friday that a New York collector charged with stealing documents from a Maryland archive can be freed on bail.

Barry Landau is to be released Monday, The Baltimore Sun reported. He will be required to spend most of his time in his Manhattan apartment without access to the Internet.

U.S. District Judge Catherine Blake said prosecutors did not make a convincing case that Landau is a flight risk or that he might destroy stolen historical documents to get rid of evidence against him.

Landau and a co-defendant, Jason Savedoff, were arrested at the Maryland Historical Society. They allegedly removed 60 documents, including one bearing Abraham Lincoln's signature, with a total sale value estimated at $1 million.

Savedoff, who was released on $250,000 bail last week, is cooperating with investigators, the report said.

Investigators who searched Landau's apartment removed thousands of documents they say be have been stolen from libraries.

Belarus activist's arrest criticized

European Parliament President Jerzy Buzek has expressed "great concern" about the arrest of a prominent human rights activist in Belarus.

Ales Belyatsky, head of the human rights group Vesna, was arrested Thursday, his apartment and office were raided and a computer and documents seized, said Anastasia Loiko, a Vesna activist, RIA Novosti reported.

Belyatsky, accused of evading taxes, faces a maximum seven-year sentence.

Buzek, a former prime minister of Poland, expressed "great concern" about the arrest and called Belyatsky and others "unjustly detained political prisoners."

"Dragging people off the streets takes us back to the dark Communist past that we do not want repeated ever again," Buzek said in a statement. "This is unacceptable on our continent in the 21st century.

"I urge the Belarusian authorities to release Ales Belyatsky and the other unjustly detained political prisoners. Such repressive actions will only bring people closer together, uniting them to the final goal -- that of freedom and liberty."

Hundreds of people were arrested in July in Belarus, a former Soviet Republic, for their participation in protests against Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko's authoritarian rule. Some demonstrators were beaten, reports said.
